A look at what led us to create Remote Uncontrolled—and why this project means something to us
When we first moved to China, neither of us planned to stay long. But after working casual gigs and teaching, we reached a fork in the road: head back home or build something real here. Rome doubled down on education and storytelling. I dove into building a startup in manufacturing and outsourcing.
We took different paths, but both led to sustainable, meaningful careers. We’re genuinely glad we made that choice—and it’s why we know living overseas can work long-term.
We’ve watched close friends talk about moving abroad or starting businesses—but then freeze. They build checklists and set goals, but something mental keeps them stuck. It wasn’t lack of practical advice or logistics—they had info.
What they needed was to see it, to believe it. We wanted them to feel that same confidence and freedom we have now, without the fear or doubt holding them back.

We realized we weren’t the answer—but there are plenty of people who are. People you’ve never heard from who built a life overseas in their own way. Each has a different story, background, and pathway—so someone listening will relate.
We decided to step aside and let their voices lead. Instead of telling you how to do it, we’ll show you—by bringing forward the real stories that help you see what’s actually possible.
The expats behind the mic—sharing stories, asking questions, and living the journey right alongside you.
Rome Bryant is an international school educator, father of two, and longtime expat based in Hangzhou, China. He’s been living and working in China since 2015, teaching computer science and design at top-tier schools while staying active in the expat community.
Before Covid-19, Rome hosted a podcast and led a stand-up comedy group that toured cities across China. He grew up all over the world in a military family, so adapting to new places isn’t new—but helping others do it is something he cares deeply about.
Rome brings curiosity, empathy, and sharp questions to every episode, aiming to uncover what really makes expat life work—not just the highlight reel, but the habits and mindset behind it.
